Homework Policy
Students in 6th grade can expect about 50 - 60 minutes of homework per night.
Homework is intended to enhance the learning process by extending the skills learned in class. Students should be able to complete their homework with little or no help from family members. If a student is having a difficult time answering a challenging question on their homework assignment, they are encouraged to circle it, put a question mark next to it and move on. If you notice your student is having extreme difficulty understanding or is taking more than the average time to complete assignments, please contact me.

Planner
Each student will be issued a planner at the beginning of the year. Students are required to write in their planner daily. They will receive two points for having their planner at school and filled out, and will receive one point for having their planner signed by a parent/guardian each night.
Late Work
- All work is expected to be of high quality and turned in on time.
- Homework must be turned in at the beginning of the day, or rotation to receive full credit and avoid being considered late.
- If absent, students will be allowed as many days as they were absent to make up their work (e.g. 3 days absent = 3 days to make up work).
- 7 Day Rule: Assignments can be turned in late up to one calendar week after the due date for full credit with a Late Work Coupon (see details below).
- Without a Late Work Coupon, students may still turn in work with a 10% penalty per week (please note that days 1-7 after an assignment will be considered week 1; days 8-14 would be week 2 and will result in a 20% penalty).
Late Work Coupons:
Students will be given 4 Late Work Coupons to use per term. A Late Work Coupon allows a student to turn in a completed assignment for full credit within 7 days of the original due date.
* Late Work Coupons must be completely filled out and attached to the assignment.
* Only one completed assignment per pass may be submitted.
* Late Work Coupons may NOT be used for long term projects, I.R.P. reports, and other 'teacher determined' assignments.
*Late Work Coupons cannot be used for missing and/or incomplete assignments.
Redo Policy
If a student scores less than 80% on a piece of classwork, they will have the opportunity to resubmit the work within 24 hours for an updated grade. If a student does not choose to utilize this opportunity, the grade lower than 80% will remain. I will e-mail parents bi-weekly if Aspire shows a grade point at a C or below level in a specific subject.
Extra Credit
Extra credit will not be given on assessments or quiz's. Students will have the opportunity to retake certain assessments if they score below 80%. There will be some opportunities for extra credit throughout the year but this will be limited to specific assignments and projects.
Electronics
If you choose to bring a cell phone or any other electronic item to school (including watch phones), it must remain in a locker turned off at all times. This includes recess, brain breaks, bathroom breaks and lunch. This policy is new this year, please review our updated policy here. The student accepts all responsibility when bringing these items to school.
I do allow electronic readers (kindle, etc.) during silent reading time in class. However, the student must exhibit responsible behavior with the device and can lose the privilege if necessary

Teacher Communication Commitment
Teacher and parent communication is key in creating a successful learning experience for every student. I feel passionate about creating a positive parent teacher relationship and pledge to keep the following communication commitments:
- I will do my very best to respond to e-mail within 24 hours. If you have contacted me and I have not responded within 24 hours please send a followup message (sometimes e-mail can get sent to the junk folder or other scenarios may occur).
- I will respond to e-mails sent after 4:30 pm (M-Th) or 1:30 (F) on the following day. I will respond to e-mails sent on the weekend, including Friday after 1:30 pm, on the following Monday.
- I will keep my website updated. Weekly homework will be included as well as a weekly letter and a summary of what students will be learning over a two week period (Two-Weeks At a Glance).
- If a student e-mails me I will forward and copy all parents/guardians for the remainder of any conversation. No electronic communication will take place without the parent being copied and aware.
- I will demonstrate kindness and professionalism through all my communication.
Snack and Water Bottle
Each student has the option to bring a water bottle to school. The water bottle must have a lid that closes securely and doesn't spill when tipped over. Snacks can be eaten at afternoon recess but must not be shared with other students. If you child has any specific needs regarding snack, please let me know and I will make accommodations as applicable.
