Dear Parents,
We have had an amazing first week of school! I have sincerely enjoyed getting to know your students. We started off the week with the incredible experience of viewing and learning about the solar eclipse. We spent time getting to know each other through various activities, such as collecting and graphing class data, creating some iPod art and playing a few icebreaker games. The students also took a few beginning of the year benchmark assessments so we can determine where to focus our instruction this year. You might have heard about our Paper Bridge Stem Challenge. The goal was to make the strongest bridge and every group’s bridge was able to hold all of the pennies without breaking. Next week we’ll be testing the bridges again with some stronger weights. Today we spent time focusing on Habit 2, “Begin with the end in mind.” Students created their own personal mission statements to help guide them through their year as 6th graders. Next week we will be starting math classes and our afternoon rotations for science, STEM, history, and writing. The students will have homework every evening. Please check my website for homework details. You can also check the other teachers’ sites for homework specific to their rotations. Students should be showing you their planner each night and getting it signed. This year I will be using Class DoJo for our class positive behavior system. Earlier this week the students all brought home instructions for you to sign up for an account. You will be able to see how many points they are earning each day. In addition, I will be able to post pictures from our class in a secure environment, and parents will be able to post pictures as well. If you have questions about Class DoJo or if your child lost the instruction sheet for singing up, please let me know. We are still in need of several single subject notebooks, if anyone is able to donate some to the class, we would greatly appreciate it! For Mr. Talty's STEM/Research class, please visit the following link for further information regarding "found items" to donate. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NzQI9lQTk36d13nwVbPRCuOAc0Lx-_i6gg9Eh6tQxCg/edit#gid=0 Please know how delighted I am to be teaching your children. We are going to have an amazing year! Thank you! ~Mrs. Reese
